The Yomiuri ShimbunCollapsed stone walls cover the ground at Kumamoto Castle in Kumamoto on Wednesday, when the city government allowed the media to enter the castle for the first time since a series of powerful earthquakes hit Kumamoto Prefecture and neighboring regions. It was confirmed that 53 sections of stone walls had collapsed and damage was sustained to parts of the castle designated by the central government as important cultural properties. These include the Uto Yagura turret, which has stood since the castle was constructed in 1607.
