The Yomiuri Shimbun The Japanese Olympic Committee announced Friday it has picked Saori Yoshida, three-time Olympic gold medalist in women’s wrestling, as captain of the nation’s athletic delegation to the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in August.

Yoshida, 33, will become the first female athlete to lead the nation’s athletic delegation to the Summer Games. At the previous London Olympics, she served as the flag bearer during the opening ceremony.

She will compete in the women’s 53-kilogram class in the upcoming Olympic Games, gunning for her fourth straight gold medal. She has won 13 consecutive titles at the annual World Championships.

The JOC has judged that her outstanding record and reputation are fit for the captain of the athletic delegation. A ceremony to form the athletic delegation will be held Sunday in Tokyo.

As for the Winter Games, female speed skaters Seiko Hashimoto and Tomomi Okazaki served as captains in the 1994 Lillehammer and 2006 Turin Olympics, respectively.Speech
