High alert for Olympics

Brazilian soldiers are on full alert at Galeao International Airport in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday as part of strengthened security for the Olympics.

By Kenichi Yoshida / Yomiuri Shimbun Correspondent RIO DE JANEIRO — Full-scale mobilization of military units started in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday to ensure security ahead of the opening of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics on Aug. 5.

The city is on high alert with soldiers deployed throughout, including Galeao International Airport, and the world-famous Copacabana beach.

The Brazilian government plans to mobilize more than 85,000 personnel, including about 22,000 soldiers.
