[Movie] Fiery prayers

The Yomiuri ShimbunParticipants throw torches toward a cage on top of a Japanese cypress tree in the Hirogawara Matsuage festival in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto, on Aug. 24. Believed to have started during the Edo period (1603-1867), the festival is held on the dry riverbed of the Oigawa river in the ward’s Hirogawara area to pray for a good harvest and health. About 1,200 torches were lit at about 8:30 p.m. and participants threw them toward the cage 20 meters above. [Released on Aug. 25, 2016]
