[Movie] Boots on new ground

The Yomiuri Shimbun

The Yomiuri ShimbunA research team lands on Nishinoshima island, which is part of the Ogasawara Islands, a remote part of Tokyo, on Thursday. This is the first landing since volcanic eruptions began in November 2013, continuing for about two years. Researchers are interested in the island’s ecosystem, which is expected to reestablish itself from scratch after having been almost destroyed by the eruptions. The team consists of scientists who specialize in volcanoes, geology, birds and other fields. They were to gather samples of lava rock, to observe the nesting of seabirds and to install devices including seismographs that monitor volcanic activities in and around the island. Speech
