“Kobe Beppin Lunch” for two at the Hotel Okura Kobe

The Yomiuri ShimbunChinese restaurant Toh-Ka-Lin at the Hotel Okura Kobe in Chuo Ward, Kobe, is offering a special lunch menu to let customers experience the favorite dishes of Atsuko Banno (1918-2005). The main character in NHK’s current morning serial drama, “Beppin-san,” is based on her.

Banno, one of the founders of children’s clothing company Familiar Ltd, is said to have often visited the hotel privately and on business after its opening in 1989, and especially enjoyed dining at the restaurant.

In the “Kobe Beppin Lunch,” diners can choose three main dishes from nine options, including shrimp in chili sauce, spicy mapo tofu and sweet and sour pork, along with a cold dish, soup, deep-fried dish and three kinds of dim sum. The dessert is an almond jelly with lemon, which used to be a “secret dish” specially prepared for Banno. The Kobe Beppin Lunch set, which costs ¥3,456 per person, including tax and excluding service charge, can be ordered for tables of two or more.

A smaller set called “Kobe Beppin Lunch Light,” includes one main dish for ¥2,500 including tax and service charge.

The special lunch menu is available until March 31, 2017.

“As this is Cantonese cuisine, we make the dishes with a refreshingly light flavor,” said Eiichi Maekawa, the head chef.
