Futenma runway to be repaired

Jiji Press NAHA (Jiji Press) — The U.S. Marine Corps on Wednesday announced a plan to start work on Thursday to repair the runway at the Futenma Air Station in Ginowan, Okinawa Prefecture.

The refurbishment is necessary for helping the Marine Corps ensure safe training at the Futenma base and maintain its operational capabilities until a replacement facility for the air station is completed, it said.

The move is expected to further increase concerns among local residents that the Futenma base, which is located in a densely populated area, will continue to remain at its current site.Speech
