Ex-Hitachi chief wanted for TEPCO role

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — The Japanese government has asked former Hitachi Ltd. Chairman Takashi Kawamura, 77, to be the next chairman of Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc., informed sources said Friday.

The government expects Kawamura, who has led the electronics and machinery maker to a quick turnaround, to help reform TEPCO, which needs to raise huge funds for decommissioning reactors at its disaster-crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant and compensating those who have suffered from the March 2011 nuclear accident there.

Kawamura is positive about accepting the offer, the sources said.

The government also plans to replace TEPCO board members other than Chairman Fumio Sudo.Speech
