¥5 tril. of reconstruction funds unused

Jiji PressTOKYO (Jiji Press) — A total of ¥5 trillion earmarked by the government in the five years from fiscal 2011 for funds to cover reconstruction projects in areas hit by the March 2011 disaster had not been used as of the end of fiscal 2015, the Board of Audit of Japan said Wednesday.

The figure at the end of March last year accounted for about 15 percent of the ¥33.49 trillion in total funds set aside for such projects in the government-set intensive reconstruction period between fiscal 2011 and fiscal 2015.

The board believes that the funds were not used due to delays in coastal levee construction and rezoning work.

It called on the central and local governments in disaster areas to communicate more closely.
