Kishida to visit N.Y. for U.N. talks on North Korea

The Yomiuri Shimbun Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida is making arrangements to travel to New York to attend a ministerial-level meeting of the U.N. Security Council on the North Korean nuclear missile problem on April 28, according to sources.

Kishida, along with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, intends to convince China that it has an important role to play in resolving the issue, the sources said.

The ministerial-level meeting was called by the United States, the current chair of the council, in response to mounting tensions over North Korea.

Besides the United States, representatives of the Security Council’s 14 other permanent and nonpermanent member states are expected to attend.

Tillerson will chair the meeting, which is expected to focus on additional measures for increased pressure on North Korea.
