Shiraishi to be renamed head of newspaper group

The Yomiuri Shimbun The Japan Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association has informally decided to reappoint Kojiro Shiraishi, chairman of the board of The Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings and The Yomiuri Shimbun, for his third term as its chairman.

Shiraishi’s current term will end in June, so the association held a meeting of the chairman selection committee on Wednesday. The association comprises 130 newspaper publishers, wire service agencies and broadcasters.

The chairman’s term is two years. The association’s official decision will be made at a general meeting of its members and a board meeting that are scheduled for June 21.

A graduate of Kyoto University’s Faculty of Letters, Shiraishi joined The Yomiuri Shimbun in 1969.

He has held posts including deputy editor of the Political News Department, chief officer of the Digital Media Bureau, managing editor of the Editorial Bureau and chairman of the Editorial Board. He served as president of The Yomiuri Shimbun and the holding company before he assumed his current post in June 2016.Speech
