Department store sales down in March

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Sales at department stores in March dropped 0.9 percent from a year earlier on a same-store basis, down for the 13th consecutive month, an industry group said Thursday.

Overall sales at 231 stores operated by 80 companies totaled ¥519.5 billion.

The fall is mainly attributable to sluggish sales of spring clothing reflecting low temperatures, according to the Japan Department Stores Association.

But the number of customers rose 0.6 percent, up for the first time in eight months.

In addition, sales increased in some areas of the country, particularly in Osaka, which saw 3.4 percent growth.Speech
