Court Rejects Damages Claim over Tsunami Deaths in Japan

Jiji Press MORIOKA (Jiji Press) — Morioka District Court on Friday turned down a claim for damages against the city government of Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture, by the families of two people killed in the March 2011 tsunami.

The families demanded some ¥90 million per victim in compensation, accusing the city government of failing to inform residents that a disaster prevention center in the Unosumai district was not an appropriate evacuation site for tsunami.

The two and some 200 others died during evacuation at the center after it was hit by the tsunami caused by a massive earthquake.Speech
