[Movie] Nishinoshima island’s volcanic eruption captured by Ogasawara photographer

The Yomiuri Shimbun Masuo Tomita, a photographer living on Tokyo’s Chichijima island in the Ogasawara island chain, shot a video of Nishinoshima island on June 16 as lava spewed from one of its craters.

Tomita was participating in a cruise ship tour of the Ogasawara islands organized by a travel agency, starting from Chichijima island.

He was out on the deck with a camera as the ship approached Nishinoshima island in the evening.

The ship was sailing about two kilometers off the island. White steam was rising from the sea around the island and every few minutes the roar of an eruption was heard, according to Tomita. Volcanic ash fell in a light rain. A glowing red crater could be seen when the ship sailed to the windward side of the island. [Released on June 19, 2017]
