Ueno Zoo confirms baby panda is female

A baby giant panda born on June 12 is seen at Ueno Zoo in Tokyo on Thursday.

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo said Friday that the baby giant panda born at the zoo last week has been confirmed to be a girl.

The baby, the first giant panda cub born at the zoo in about five years, is in good health, it said.

The cub’s third physical examination was held on Thursday, according to the zoo and other sources.

The exam showed that the cub was 17.6 centimeters tall and weighed 283.9 grams, according to the zoo.

The cub was born on June 12 to giant panda Shin Shin, 11, and her same-age male partner, Ri Ri.
