[Movie] Heavenly sea of clouds

The Yomiuri Shimbun

The Yomiuri ShimbunRays of light, referred to as “angel ladders,” pierce a sea of clouds hovering above Lake Kussharo in Hokkaido, creating a mysterious morning scene. The cloud formation can be viewed from Tsubetsu Pass at an elevation of 947 meters. The clouds form off the coast of Kushiro and are swept up to Kushiro Marsh and Lake Kussharo by southern winds. According to Morinokodama, a nonprofit organization that organizes tours to view the cloud formations, the peak season is between June and August.
As with anything concerning nature, getting to see the clouds involves an element of luck. In 2016, the sea of clouds was visible on about 60 percent of the tours. [Released on June 27, 2017]
