Japan to propose saury catch quotas

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Japan will propose setting catch quotas for each saury-fishing country and region, fisheries minister Yuji Yamamoto said on Tuesday.

The proposal will be put forward at a meeting of the North Pacific Fisheries Commission set to start in Sapporo on Thursday, Yamamoto told a news conference.

It will be the first time for Japan to suggest quotas on saury.

The Japanese proposal is also expected to include limiting the number of saury fishing boats.

The proposal comes as saury catches in Japan are decreasing sharply, Yamamoto said.Speech
