The top brands of Japanese sake are lined up in front of chief judge Xavier Thuizat at the Kura Master competition in Paris.

Jiji Press PARIS (Jiji Press) — Four sake brands from Saga Prefecture ranked among the top 10 at a Japanese sake contest in Paris, results of the contest showed Tuesday.

At the Kura Master contest held in Paris last month, more than 30 jurors, including top sommeliers in France, tasted 550 sake brands from across Japan. They chose top five brands each in the “junmai” and “junmai daiginjo” categories.

The best brand of the competition will be announced in October.

The event, organized by a committee led by Xavier Thuizat, chief sommelier at the Hotel de Crillon in the French capital, was designed to promote sake internationally.

The contest was the first of its kind in France, the organizer said.

Other sake brands on the top five lists are one each from the eastern prefecture of Gunma, from the western prefectures of Wakayama, Hiroshima and Kochi, and from the southwestern prefectures of Oita and Kumamoto.

Sake from Saga is great, but it is a surprise that they have the largest number of brands among the top 10, Thuizat said.
