The Yomiuri Shimbun Yokozuna Kakuryu on Wednesday informed officials of his decision to withdraw from the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament, a day after suffering an ankle injury while being dealt his first defeat.
The 31-year-old Mongolian has now been forced to pull out of consecutive tournaments, and this is his third time withdrawing from a basho this year.
Kakuryu injured his right ankle when he lost to No. 2 maegashira Hokutofuji. He was diagnosed with damage to a lateral ligament that will require about three weeks of treatment and rest.
