Death toll rises to 32 in northern Kyushu

Jiji Press FUKUOKA/OITA (Jiji Press) — The death toll rose to 32 in torrential rain-hit northern areas of the Kyushu region on Friday, while 14 people were still missing.

One body found near the mouth of the Chikugo River on Saturday was identified as a resident of the city of Asakura, Fukuoka Prefecture, and a woman was confirmed dead in the same city, according to local authorities.

Authorities also said 13 people were still unaccounted for in Asakura and one in the Fukuoka city of Ukiha and that some 1,100 evacuees were unable to return home in Fukuoka and neighboring Oita Prefecture.

The same day, the Fukuoka prefectural government asked the infrastructure ministry to take over emergency restoration work for rivers filled with dirt and driftwood after landslides in upper areas.Speech
