Scrambles against China planes drop

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — The Air Self-Defense Force scrambled fighter jets a total of 101 times against Chinese aircraft in April-June, down by 98 from a year before, the Defense Ministry said Friday.

The drop came after the number of ASDF scrambles against Chinese planes hit a record high in fiscal 2016, which ended in March.

The total number of scrambles by ASDF fighters against foreign aircraft stood at 229 in the first quarter of fiscal 2017, down by 52, the ministry said.

In May, the ASDF scrambled fighter jets against what was believed to be a drone flown from a China Coast Guard ship in Japanese waters near the Senkaku Islands in Okinawa Prefecture.Speech
