[Movie] A midsummer spectacle

The Yomiuri ShimbunHuge lantern floats take to the streets in Aomori on Aug. 2, heralding the start of the Aomori Nebuta Festival — a summer highlight. Of the 25 floats, 14 are about five meters tall and nine meters wide, while the rest are smaller. Crowds cheered loudly during the parade, as drums sounded and the floats started moving just after 7 p.m. Nebuta dancers, called haneto, jumped around the colorful floats shouting “rassera.” The entire town was filled with excitement. The festival runs through Aug. 7. [Released on August 3, 2017]
