The Yomiuri ShimbunLONDON — Teenager Abdul Hakim Sani Brown and Olympic veteran Shota Iizuka moved to Wednesday’s semifinals in the 200 meters at the world championships on Monday.
Sani Brown clocked 20.52 seconds to come in second in heat one, and Iizuka ran 20.58 to take second in heat seven.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Takatoshi Abe made it as far as the semifinals before bowing out. Meanwhile, triple jump athlete Ryoma Yamamoto lost in the preliminaries.
Iizuka’s reserved nature completely changed when he learned the results. He had initially come in fourth in his heat, meaning he was out, but the two athletes ahead of him were disqualified, pushing him to second.
“It was all a little confusing, but it gave me this opportunity,” he said. He seemed relieved to find the door to the semifinals was still open for him.
Sani Brown, on the other hand, went from crashing out of the 100-meter semis to running in the 200 — all in one day.
