Motegi ‘gave out pocket notebooks’

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — New Economic Revitalization Minister Toshimitsu Motegi distributed House of Representatives pocket notebooks to executives of his local support group free of charge, the weekly magazine Shukan Shincho reported Wednesday.

The distribution of notebooks of the lower chamber of the Diet is highly likely to constitute a donation, banned under the public offices election law, according to the Shukan Shincho report.

The article also said that Motegi, a key member of the new cabinet launched last week, gave out calendars in his constituency in Tochigi Prefecture in the past.

A comment issued by his office admitted that he had given notebooks and calendars to people related to his Liberal Democratic Party.

But the office insisted that the distribution was part of the political activities of a party branch, denying that the practice poses any problem under the law.Speech
