The Yomiuri Shimbun A strong earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 5.9 jolted Fukushima Prefecture and other areas at about 11:56 p.m. Friday.
A lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 was registered in Naraha and Kawauchi in the prefecture.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake had an epicenter off Fukushima Prefecture and occurred at a depth of about 50 kilometers. It is believed to be an aftershock of the Great East Japan Earthquake that took place on March 11, 2011. No tsunami warning has been issued.
There have been no abnormalities reported at nuclear facilities in the Tohoku region, including the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, according to the Secretariat of the Nuclear Regulation Authority.
