The Yomiuri ShimbunA man portraying a Shinto priest trims the antlers of a deer at an annual event in Nara. A facility called Rokuen, which protects the deer in Nara Park, undertakes the cutting of antlers every autumn to prevent the animals from injuring each other or visitors. About 1,100 people watched on Saturday, the first day, as men captured bucks with a lasso. The antler-cutting dates back to the early Edo period, and this year’s event ends today.Speech
