Winter break

The Yomiuri Shimbun

The Yomiuri Shimbun White-fronted geese take off from Izunuma pond as they search for food in the morning sunshine on Tuesday, the first day of winter in the traditional Japanese calendar. The pond straddles the cities of Kurihara and Tome in Miyagi Prefecture and is registered under the Ramsar Convention on wetlands. About 80,000 geese winter at Izunuma pond and the adjacent Uchinuma pond, according to the Miyagi Prefectural Izunuma-Uchinuma Environmental Foundation. They will return to Siberia in spring.Speech
