Fuji Optical honored for helping refugees

The Yomiuri ShimbunFuji Optical Co. will be awarded the 24th Yomiuri International Cooperation Prize for its steady efforts to provide free eyeglasses for refugees and internally displaced people overseas.

An award ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 16 in Tokyo. Fuji Optical, a Sapporo-based company, will also receive ¥5 million at the ceremony.

Since 1983, Fuji Optical employees have voluntarily visited refugee camps in Asia and the former Soviet bloc and made prescription lenses tailored to people’s specific visual needs. The company has distributed about 200,000 pairs of glasses across 10 countries, making a significant contribution to expanding educational and job opportunities for refugees.

The Japan News plans to carry a special page about the company in a mid-November issue.Speech
