Coordination on free trade to be focus at APEC meet

Jiji Press DA NANG, Vietnam (Jiji Press) — Leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum member economies will be under scrutiny on whether they can demonstrate a stance of coordinating on trade liberalization in their two-day meeting set to open in Da Nang, central Vietnam, on Friday night.

At the end of the meeting on Saturday, the leaders will adopt a declaration setting out the results of their discussions.

The meeting comes at a time when the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is emphasizing bilateral trade relations for negotiations that are advantageous to his nation. On Thursday, 11 signatories to the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade accord reached a broad agreement in talks on concluding a new TPP deal without the United States.

At the APEC summit, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is expected to welcome the broad agreement and urge member economies to work together closely to promote free trade.Speech
