Convenience stores log sales drop

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Seven-Eleven Japan Co. reported Friday that its sales declined 0.5 percent from a year before on a same-store basis in October, down for the first time in five years and three months.

The drop reflected lower customer traffic due to bad weather, with typhoons hitting Japan twice in the reporting month, according the unit of Seven & i Holdings Co.

Per-customer spending was up 4.2 percent, but the number of customers fell 4.5 percent.

A spokesman for Seven-Eleven Japan said that sales of bento boxed meals and prepared foods remained brisk despite bad weather.

Meanwhile, same-store sales declined 1.2 percent at FamilyMart Co., a unit of FamilyMart Uny Holdings Co., and 4 percent at Lawson Inc., also affected by long spells of rain.Speech
