Tokyo Disneyland, which welcomed its 700 millionth visitor this summer, and sister park Tokyo DisneySea would undergo vast expansion under a plan being considered by operator Oriental Land Co.

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Oriental Land Co. is considering spending several hundred billion yen to expand its Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea theme parks, informed sources said Wednesday.

The company is planning to introduce new attractions in 2020 or later by expanding the Tokyo Disney Resort parks in Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture, the sources said.

It will be the biggest investment by Oriental Land since Tokyo DisneySea opened in 2001.

The expansion is designed to help reduce chronic congestion and lure more Asian and other foreign visitors, as the company is aiming to survive intensifying competition in the global theme park industry.

For the expansion, Oriental Land plans to utilize the site currently used for parking. A new multistory parking garage will be built to create space for the expansion.

Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea attract a total of some 30 million visitors annually.

A number of hotels are being constructed near the theme parks.
