Onodera, Mattis see need to pursue N. Korean policy change

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera and U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Tuesday agreed on the need to pursue a policy change by North Korea, which keeps developing nuclear weapons and missiles.

The officials also reaffirmed close cooperation among their countries and South Korea in their telephone talks that preceded a high-level meeting between the two Koreas on the day.

Regarding the North-South meeting, the first since December 2015, Onodera and Mattis agreed that dialogue for dialogue’s sake is meaningless and that it is important to make the North change its policy, according to officials familiar with the phone talks.

Onodera noted the importance of maximizing pressure on the reclusive country, and Mattis concurred. Onodera said the resumption of North-South talks means that the pressure on the North has worked to some extent.Speech
