Giving chase

The Yomiuri Shimbun

The Yomiuri ShimbunFarm horses canter at the Tokachi Bokujo ranch of the National Livestock Breeding Center in Otofuke, Hokkaido, on Tuesday morning. Known as umaoi, or horse chasing, the practice is meant to relieve the horses’ lack of exercise and help pregnant mares have easier deliveries. For about two months prior to the birthing period in February to April, the horses do three laps, about 2.4 kilometers, of the grounds most days of the week.Speech
