The Yomiuri Shimbun Yokozuna Kisenosato and Kakuryu, who have had to either skip or withdraw midway through the past four tournaments, will compete in the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament starting Sunday at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, both wrestlers said Thursday.
Kisenosato, 31, who withdrew on the 10th day of the Kyushu tourney in November because of injuries to his lower back and left ankle, also skipped the regional winter tours to prepare for the upcoming basho.
“I’ve been able to prepare well. I will just go out and do my best in the tournament,” Kisenosato said after his morning workout. He also skipped the September basho and withdrew from the May and July tournaments.
Kakuryu, 32, was absent from the previous two tournaments because of numerous injuries, including one to his right ankle.
