The Yomiuri ShimbunAbout 3,700 people gather at Kobe East Park in Chuo Ward, Kobe, on Wednesday morning for an event titled “1.17 meeting” to remember the Great Hanshin Earthquake. The quake occurred on Jan. 17, 1995, and ultimately claimed 6,434 lives. This year marked the 23rd anniversary of the disaster. Bamboo lanterns were lit, and people offered silent prayers for the victims and bereaved family members at 5:46 a.m., the time the earthquake struck. Speech
