Miho Takagi competes during the women’s 3,000 meters race at the Gangneung Oval at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in Gangneung on Saturday.

The Japan NewsSpeed skater Miho Takagi finished fifth in the women’s 3,000-meter event at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics on Saturday night.

Takagi clocked a time of 4:01.35. The Netherlands swept the podium as Carlijn Achtereekte won gold with a time of 3:59.21, Ireen Wust collected silver and Antoinette de Jong took home bronze.

The 3,000-meter race requires endurance and a strong skating technique to maintain a fast pace.

Skaters from the United States and Europe tend to have a physical advantage and have dominated the podium until now.

Takagi, who hails from Hokkaido, started skating at the age of 5. After failing to qualify for the Sochi Winter Olympics, the versatile skater took the top spot in the 3,000-meter and 1,500-meter events at the Winter Asian Games in February last year.

Takagi won three events including the 3,000 meters at the speed skating World Cup this season. Speech
