Wellinger stuns Stoch to win gold

AFP-Jiji PYEONGCHANG (AFP-Jiji) — Andreas Wellinger stunned reigning double Olympic champion Kamil Stoch to win the men’s normal hill ski jumping gold in swirling winds at the Pyeongchang Winter Games on Saturday.

Poland’s Stoch finished a shock fourth as the young German won the title from Johann Andre Forfang, who took silver, and fellow Norwegian Robert Johansson.

The 22-year-old Wellinger, who had a nervous wait for the rest of the field to finish, adds gold in South Korea to the team title he won at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

The action was held up on numerous occasions because of the wind blowing right into the competitors’ faces at Alpensia Ski Jumping Center, extending the final event of the day well past midnight.
