Miho Takagi wins silver medal on Monday.

The Japan NewsGANGNEUNG — Speed skater Miho Takagi won a silver medal at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in the women’s 1,500 meters on Monday night.

Takagi finished fifth in the women’s 3,000 meters on Saturday.

Takagi, a 23-year-old native of Hokkaido, started skating at the age of 5. She first appeared at the Olympics as a teenager at the 2010 Vancouver Games, but failed to make the team for the Sochi Olympics in 2014.

Undeterred, the versatile skater rebounded to take the top spot in both the 1,500- and 3,000-meter races at the Winter Asian Games in February last year. This season, Takagi won titles in three events on the World Cup circuit, including the 1,500. Speech
