Kono sees ‘desperate’ move

The Yomiuri ShimbunThe Japanese government views with caution the recent move by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to accept talks with a South Korean special delegation, believing it was intended to weaken cooperation between Japan, the United States and South Korea.

Regarding Kim’s acceptance of Seoul’s offer to hold talks, Foreign Minister Taro Kono said at a press conference after a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning, “Because sanctions have become effective, [North Korea’s] attempts at ‘smiling diplomacy’ likely have grown desperate.”
