Beijing calls for early U.S.-DPRK talks

Jiji Press BEIJING (Jiji Press) — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on the United States and North Korea on Thursday to hold a dialogue as soon as possible.

Wang welcomed signs of progress in relations between Seoul and Pyongyang that emerged through talks held between the two sides on the sidelines of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

The diplomatic thaw channeled a warm current toward the situation on the Korean Peninsula, which has long been frozen, Wang said at a press conference on the fringe of an annual session of the National People’s Congress.

He also called for the resumption of dialogue and negotiations aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution to the issue of North Korea’s nuclear development. China will continue making efforts for that purpose, he said.

Wang said China supports reconciliation efforts by the two Koreas, including an agreement to hold a summit meeting in late April.

He reiterated Beijing’s call for a halt to North Korea’s nuclear and missile tests and joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea.Speech
