Jiji PressTOKYO (Jiji Press) — A new 1.2-kilometer section of the Metropolitan Expressway linking Harumi in Tokyo’s Chuo Ward and Toyosu in Koto Ward opened on Saturday.
With the Harumi entrance and exit ramp located near the planned athlete village for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, the new expressway line including the section is expected to be used for transporting athletes during the Games, as well as for easing traffic congestion in nearby areas.
Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike was among participants at a ceremony to mark the opening of the new section held at a location near the Harumi ramp.
“We’re pinning high hopes on the new expressway section for the transportation of athletes” during the 2020 Games, said Tsukasa Akimoto, state minister of transport.
The opening will allow drivers to go to central Tokyo from the Harumi district on the Metropolitan Expressway via the Bay Shore Route. It is also expected to improve access between central Tokyo and the capital’s waterfront area, including the athlete village and the Toyosu wholesale food market, slated to open in October.Speech
