Jiji Press OSLO — Akito Watabe, the silver medalist in the Nordic combined normal hill at the Pyeongchang Olympics, picked up his sixth World Cup win of the season on Saturday in Oslo, tying him with Kenji Ogiwara for most in one season by a Japanese skier.
Watabe, who had won three previous times in Oslo, was second after the ski jumping portion and started the 10-kilometer cross-country skiing with a 28-second deficit. He won by just over 15 seconds for his 15th career title.
Watabe caught up to leader Jarl Magnus Riiber of Norway at the 4-kilometer mark, then pulled away at 7 kilometers while never allowing the trailing group to catch up.
In the overall World Cup standings, Watabe extended his lead over Norway’s Jan Schmid, who finished fourth on Saturday, to 101 points with six events remaining.
