Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp. said Wednesday that it will change its corporate name to Nippon Steel Corp. on April 1, 2019, returning to a former name after about 70 years.
The change of corporate name is subject to approval at a shareholder meeting on June 26.
The old Nippon Steel was created in 1934 through a merger of steel plants, including Yawata Works, a symbol of Japan’s industrial revolution, but it was dissolved in 1950 after the end of World War II.
Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal also said it will make affiliate Nisshin Steel Co. a wholly owned subsidiary in January next year. Nisshin Steel stock will be delisted from the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Dec. 26 this year.Speech
