Jiji Press HIROSHIMA (Jiji Press) — Representatives from 87 countries and the European Union will attend this year’s peace memorial ceremony in Hiroshima that marks the 73rd anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing, the municipal government said Wednesday.
The United Nations will be represented at the Aug. 6 event by Izumi Nakamitsu, high representative for disarmament affairs, who last year became the first Japanese woman to be a U.N. undersecretary general. She attended last year’s ceremony.
At this year’s event, 58 countries and the EU will be represented by ambassadors to Japan.
Among nuclear states, France and Pakistan will send their ambassadors. Britain will send a charge d’affaires and Russia a consul-general. China will be absent while the United States and India have not replied to invitations.
