The Yomiuri Shimbun

The Yomiuri Shimbun Geiko, as geisha are known in Kyoto, and maiko, or apprentice geiko, greet the proprietress of long-established teahouse Matsuyae in Gionkobu, one of the five hanamachi geiko districts in Kyoto, on Wednesday. The kimono-clad geiko and maiko were performing a tradition called hassaku, in which they are required to call upon their dance and music teachers, teahouse proprietresses and others. Hassaku means Aug. 1 on the lunar calendar.Speech
