Death toll in Hokkaido quake rises to 35

The Yomiuri ShimbunThe death toll from Thursday’s powerful earthquake in Hokkaido in Japan’s north rose to 35, the National Police Agency and relevant local governments told The Yomiuri Shimbun on Saturday. Three people still remain missing or unaccounted for, according to Hokkaido prefectural government.

Meanwhile, blackouts that have affected almost 2.95 million households across nearly all of Hokkaido were to be resolved by late Saturday night, with exceptions in some places, Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Hiroshige Seko said at a press conference on Saturday evening.

As of 9 p.m. on Saturday, about 1,800 households were still without power, according to Hokkaido Electric Power Co.
