Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — The Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry said Sunday it has found the nation’s first swine fever case in 26 years at a pig farm in Gifu Prefecture.
The previous case occurred in Kumamoto Prefecture in December 1992.
The infectious disease, also known as hog cholera, occurs in pigs and wild boars. It does not spread to humans, even through consumption of the meat of an infected pig.
The farm started culling its pigs.
According to ministry and Gifu prefectural government officials, the farm had 79 pigs for breeding and 531 pigs for pork as of Sunday morning.
