Child porn cases hit record high

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — The number of child pornography cases detected by police in January-June this year increased by 281 from a year before to a record 1,423, a National Police Agency survey showed Thursday.

Child pornography victims under 18 totaled 615 in the six-month period.

Of the victims, about 40 percent were deceived or intimidated into taking nude selfies and sending them to the perpetrators.

The number of child pornography offenders rose by 277 to 1,053, topping 1,000 for the first time ever on a first-half basis.

Of the victims, 234 were high school students, 212 were junior high school students and 138 were elementary school children.

Victims of selfie cases totaled 240, while 156 children were victimized by secret filming or photographing. A total of 92 children fell prey to prostitution and other indecent interactions.

Over 60 percent of the victims, or 382 children, were unacquainted with the offenders. Of them, 287 came in contact with the perpetrators over the internet, through social media or online game services, for example.

“If you send photographs to strangers, they may be posted on the internet without your permission or may be used to intimidate you into accepting escalated requests,” a National Police Agency official warned.

In a separate survey report, the agency said the number of children under 18 who became crime victims through social media reached 856 in January-June. The total fell by 63 from a record high hit a year before.

Of the victims, less than 10 percent used filtering functions of their mobile phones or other communication devices to prevent access to inappropriate websites.Speech
