China bans pig imports fom Japan

Jiji Press BEIJING (Jiji Press) — China has banned imports of pigs, wild boars and related products from Japan, due to swine fever infections found at a pig farm in Gifu last month, its customs authorities said Tuesday.

The ban is unlikely to affect bilateral trade substantially, as it came on top of an existing Chinese embargo on Japanese pork imposed in April 2010 following an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, informed sources said.

China is currently placing higher priority on responding to the spread of African swine fever, which is considered a greater threat.

Also on Tuesday, the country prohibited imports of pigs, wild boars and related products from Belgium, in the wake of the infectious animal disease occurring in the European country.Speech
