Cabinet to discuss measures against child abuse

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Thursday that related Cabinet ministers will hold a meeting on Friday to discuss measures against child abuse, following the death of a 10-year-old girl in Chiba Prefecture last month.

Abe unveiled the plan at a meeting of the Budget Committee of the House of Councillors.

At Friday’s meeting, participating ministers are expected to discuss the establishment of new rules on the handling of information on children who are possibly abused.

The girl, Mia Kurihara, a fourth-grader at an elementary school in Noda, Chiba Prefecture, was suspected to have been abused by her father, who has been arrested by local police for allegedly assaulting her.

The girl’s school and a local board of education failed to accept “her desperate message” for help, Abe said, adding the incident is extremely regrettable.
